Classroom Descriptions
Language Arts and Phonics
Phonics and pre-phonetic sounds are experienced in this classroom. Our Language Arts room has various areas designed to promote a child’s spoken, written, and visual development of language. This room houses listening centers with story books and cassettes, phonics writing desk, wall-sized flannel boards, and areas in which children learn their colors, shapes, letters, letter sounds, and words visually, auditorially, tactily, and phonetically.
The development of effective oral communication, effective listening skills, introduction to letters and letter sounds, pre-reading activities, and an introduction to a phonics program are all elements of our Language Arts program.
The Language Arts room is the Homeroom for our Pre-Kindergarten classes.
Mathematics, Manipulatives, and Construction
Arithmetic, measurement, sequencing and patterning, and geometry are experienced in this hands-on classroom. This is where the children construct, create, and compose while concurrently gaining mathematics skills and spatial reasoning. Our manipulatives, building, and construction classroom challenges the children to use their imaginations and creativity to find solutions to every-day problems while learning to develop an understanding of basic mathematical concepts.
Several types of large building materials such as wood, pipes, legos, and blocks, as well as smaller creative media such as geometric shapes, Unifix cubes, and other manipulatives are located in this classroom.
This classroom is a Preschool and/or Pre-Kindergarten class Homeroom.
Science and Sensory
This classroom hosts many of the science activities of the school. This area is dedicated to fostering a hands-on approach to learning and exploration of the sciences. The various learning materials are rotated regularly to entice our young learners to expand on their natural curiosity and explore further.
Our specialized Science teachers administer developmentally-appropriate lessons that introduce young learners to the sciences through hands-on, fun learning activities and simple experiments.
This classroom is also the Homeroom for one of our Preschool classes.
Music and Movement
This classroom provides opportunities for self-expression and creative play through movement and music, games, exploration of space, and physical activity. This room, complete with hardwood floors and a mirrored wall, houses a variety of physical education equipment designed to promote the physical well-being of a child including gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and movement through imagination, fantasy, and music.
Various musical instruments including percussions, rhythm sticks, cymbals, bongos and many folk instruments are also found in this creative sound and movement classroom.
Extracurricular classes are conducted in the Music and Movement classroom, for which we bring in outside vendors. We rotate through several reputable children’s music and physical activity classes.
Imagination and Drama
This classroom was designed to be a microcosm of a small community and has custom-made child-sized furniture and props including a life-like kitchen, fire truck, mail station, doctor’s office, construction area, and grocery store. The children dress-up and role-play to their heart’s content, wherever their imaginations guide them.
This classroom serves as the Homeroom for one of our Preschool classes.
Cafeteria and Art Studio
Our Art Program provides opportunities for both structured projects and free exploration of the elements of art, and exposes children to a variety of media and techniques. Children are introduced to concept development in activities such as painting, drawing, clay, collage, murals, sculpture, masks, puppets, printmaking, and more.
With the exception of lunch, this room is devoted to arts and crafts so that children can actively and messily engage in exploratory and expressive pieces of work. They can create, experiment, and express themselves in a classroom devoted for such purposes.
Our specialized pull-out classes in Art are held in this room.
Library and Computer Lab
This classroom is designed to foster an appreciation for literature and literacy. This space allows for individual or small group reading, with a carpeted corner for children to comfortably relax while reading books.
This room also contains a computer lab equipped with a variety of development- and age-appropriate computer software chosen for its interactive capabilities as well as its ability to provide the children the opportunity to manipulate and create with this medium. Teaching software that uses an interactive approach in teaching mathematics, colors, shapes, letters, phonics, and other concepts are installed on child-level computers.
The Kindergarten class uses this room as their Homeroom at our Park Highland Campus.
Nature and Environments
The decor of this classroom replicates the great outdoors. Whenever possible, natural items are added to this classroom to enrich our sensory activities. These items and experiences enhance the children’s exploration and understanding of the “toy” bugs, animals, and dinosaurs readily available in this classroom.
Sensory tubs are filled with a variety of tactile activities for our young learners to explore, from pouring and sifting to measuring and manipulating. This classroom is designed for children to experiment and explore using their tactile senses.
This classroom is the Homeroom for one of our Preschool classes.
